Issues & Action

Climate Change

Climate Change

Climate change affects everyone and everything. As the earth grows warmer and the climate begins to change, life as we know it will change as well.  For example, the length of farming seasons will change, and other waters will decrease or disappear completely.

Conflict

Conflict

Every aspect of society is affected by conflict. The outbreak of conflict prevents people from earning a living, going to school, and accessing resources they need to survive, such as food and medical care.

Education

Education

Wealthy countries now give $2 billion each year to help poor countries pay for basic education. They need to give $10 billion more each year to put all children in school by 2015. The United States, for example, gives a total of $465 million each year—the approximate cost of building just 17 U.S. high schools.

Global Health

Global Health

HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria are three of the worlds deadliest diseases. Together, they kill 5 million people per year and sicken many more, mostly in poor and developing parts of the world. They also take a heavy toll on young people -- keeping workers out of their jobs, parents from feeding their children and children from going to school.

Human Rights

Human Rights

In 1948 the United Nations wrote the Universal Declaration of Human Rights that established international standards to help nations educate their citizens about the rights and freedoms they are entitled to in their daily lives. Despite this effort human rights violations still occur around the world.

Hunger

Hunger

Over 1.02 billion people in the world are undernourished. More than 90 percent of the people affected by hunger live in extreme poverty (less than a dollar a day) in developing countries. The most vulnerable populations are children under five years old and women who are pregnant or breast-feeding.

Water

Water

More than 1 billion people have no access to clean and safe drinking water while over 2 billion lack access to adequate sanitation.
